Five things you’ll wish you knew before your first car rental in Chisinau
The first time you use a car rental Chisinau service, it can feel like you’re the only one who doesn’t know how it works. Those questions are completely normal. The Crazyrent team has gathered the five most important points below to help make your experience smoother. If you read them before booking, you’ll know what to ask, what to check and what to get in writing.
How to choose the right car for your first rental
A compact car with low fuel consumption that is easy to park is generally the safest choice for the city. If you plan longer trips, with luggage or with family, a more spacious model will give you more comfort. An automatic transmission is worth considering if you aren’t used to Chisinau traffic, where frequent stops get tiring. Also think about what you will actually use the car for. For a few trips around town, a low price matters most. For a trip north or to Iași, comfort, fuel consumption and safety matter more.
1. The daily price is not the final price
Let’s start with what surprises most people. When you search for cheap car rental Chisinau, you probably have a small, easy-to-calculate amount in mind: 10 euros a day, multiplied by the number of days. The real cost of a rental is made up of several elements:
the daily rate, which varies by model, season and rental length;
the security deposit, which isn’t spent but does block an amount you need to have available;
insurance: what is included and what you can add for an extra fee;
the mileage limit, if there is one, and the price for each additional kilometer;
fuel, because the car return policy matters;
extra services, such as a child seat, a second driver or pickup outside working hours.
For a reliable calculation, add up everything you will pay in total, from pickup to return, and divide it by the number of days. That figure is your real daily cost.
2. Documents prepared in advance do half the work
The second thing many people only find out in the Crazyrent parking lot: without the right documents, your booking is worth nothing. Typically, for car rent Chisinau, you will need:
a valid ID card or passport;
a valid driver’s license, held for the minimum period that rental companies require;
a bank card or another form of guarantee, depending on the terms of each offer.
Get everything ready the day before and keep it in one place: your documents, your card, a copy of your reservation and the company’s contact number. Pickup takes much less time when everything is prepared in advance.
3. Inspecting the car at pickup protects you more than any insurance
The third point seems trivial, but it is the one that prevents most unpleasant discussions at return: inspecting the car before you drive off. At Crazyrent, a car passes through many hands, and a small scratch on a fender may be old. The only proof is documenting the car’s condition at the moment of pickup.
Here is what to do so you can leave in five minutes:
Walk all the way around the car and photograph or film any scratches or dents.
Check the interior.
Compare with the handover form. Any damage you see must be listed on it.
Note the fuel level and mileage on the form and take a photo of the dashboard.
Check the mandatory equipment: the spare wheel or repair kit, the warning triangle, the first-aid kit and the fire extinguisher.
Start the engine and check the dashboard lights.
If you have questions about how a feature of the car works, ask for a short explanation.
4. Insurance doesn’t cover everything, and the difference can cost you
The fourth point is the hardest to understand, yet what you want is a simple answer: if something happens, who pays? The short answer: it depends on the type of insurance, the situation and the deductible.
Third-party liability insurance (RCA) covers the damage you cause to others, not damage to the rental car. It is mandatory and usually already included.
CASCO insurance covers, under certain conditions, damage to the car you are driving.
The deductible is the amount you pay out of any damage, even when you have insurance. It can be small or large, and some offers allow you to reduce it for an extra fee.
What to ask before signing:
Which types of insurance are included in the price?
What is the deductible, and can it be reduced?
What is never covered?
What should I do if there is an incident: whom do I notify, and within what time?
On the road the rule is simple: in the event of an accident, don’t leave the scene and don’t sign anything without notifying the Crazyrent team.
5. Return rules matter as much as pickup rules
Some of the unplanned costs appear precisely at return, because these important points get overlooked.
Fuel: if you receive the car with a full tank, return it the same way. If you return it with less, you pay for the missing fuel.
Cleanliness: a car that is very dirty inside or outside can incur a cleaning fee.
Return location: if you plan to return the car somewhere other than where you picked it up, let them know in advance. Extra fees or special conditions may apply.
The best habit is to agree on everything at pickup: who receives the car, where, at what time and who signs the return form. With a few checks done in time, your first experience with Crazyrent’s car rental services will no longer be a source of worry.
